Bungalow 44 - Lily Weaver
Tucked into downtown Mill Valley on East Blithedale Avenue, Bungalow 44 has been serving locals since 2005. For more than twenty years, it has stayed true to its original goal: to be the come-as-you-are spot just around the corner, the kind of place where neighbors bump into each other at the bar and end up staying for dinner.
The food is upscale American with a California soul. The kitchen focuses on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, and much of the menu comes off a wood-burning grill. Comfort classics like the braised short ribs and Kickin' Fried Chicken keep regulars loyal, but the dish that steals the show is the Hamachi Poppers ($21). Each bite starts with a crispy forbidden rice cake, topped with silky hamachi and creamy avocado, then finished with ponzu and thin slices of Fresno chilies. It is crunchy, buttery, bright, and just spicy enough to make you reach for another. If you order only one starter, make it this one.
What truly sets Bungalow 44 apart is the service. The staff does more than take orders. They crack jokes, talk you through the menu, and make you feel like a regular even on your first visit. It is hard to leave without a smile.
Between the lively main room, the quieter fireplace space, and a bar pouring creative cocktails, Bungalow 44 works for a date night, a family dinner, or a celebration. It is a true Mill Valley staple, and it earns that title every night.
